The national youth wing of the New Patriotic Party have issued a press statement indicating their full support of the Ghana Police Service seeing to the prosecution of all arrested persons involved in the unlawful activities that took place during the three-day demonstration to fight against illegal mining which popularly known in Ghana as “Galamsey”.
In the las few years, the government of the Republic Of Ghana’s fight against all illegal mining activities have yielded little or no results since 2017 and have rather gotten worse on a daily bases.
Therefore, the recent agitation by the citizenry have been to demand a complete against all forms of illegal mining in the country which is destructing the forest reserves, water bodies and land in the mining areas of the country.
Plus, these calls for to the leaders in government to avert all forms of mining activities in the country prompted a protest movement known as Democracy Hub to organize a demonstration dubbed “#StopGalamseyNow” in order to amplify the calls for the need to stop all illegal mining activities.
During the protest, a little over 40 participants of the demonstration were picked up by the Police as they were charged for destruction of property, unlawful assembly, engaged in vandalism, and assault on public officers.
Those arrested protestors have been in the police custody for over 48 hours which is contrary to what the 1992 constitution says and had since got many Ghanaians from all walks of life questioning the intentions and the laws for which the police have decided to rely on in keeping the arrested individuals in their custody.
Meanwhile, the youth wing of the New Patriotic Party have been have declared their stance on the matter as they have indicated that, the Ghana Police Service should see to the punishment of the arrested persons in order not for such crime to resurface.
