Italy’s Historic Hat-Trick of failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup

Italy exhibits the unthinkable, what more? The date is March 31, 2026, and the footballing world has been served with a dinner of unpalatable sauce of results, calibrating a further downward measure of once a football giant, now a minuscule in world football.

For the third consecutive time in more than a decade, the FIFA World Cup will proceed without one of its most decorated icons: Italy. The Azzuri, holders of four world titles, have transitioned from the gold standard of international football to the sport’s most tragic cautionary tale.

Since lifting the trophy in Berlin in 2006, Italy’s relationship with the World Cup has devolved from a slow decline into a full-scale institutional crisis. What began as two lackluster group-stage exits in 2010 and 2014 has curdled into a historic “triple crown” of qualification failures.

For the first time in the history of the sport, a former champion has missed three consecutive tournaments-2018, 2022, and now 2026. Even with the tournament expanding to a 48-team format designed to accommodate the giants, the blue jerseys will once again be absent from the world stage.

In the wake of the shock defeat in Zenica, we examine the factual timeline of how a nation that once ruled the world became its most prominent spectator and normalizing annual failures

Examining Italy’s Failures

It has been exactly 20 years since Fabio Grosso’s penalty hit the back of the net in Berlin, crowning Italy as four-time World Champions. At that moment, the Azzurri were at the pinnacle of the footballing world.

However, since that golden night in Berlin-Germany, 2006, Italy’s World Cup record has transformed from a storied legacy into an unprecedented sporting tragedy. In 2010, Italy made an appearance to the Mundial as the reigning champions of the world.

In South Africa, they were expected to breeze through a Group F featuring Paraguay, New Zealand, and Slovakia. Instead, they failed to win even a single game-drawing against Paraguay and New Zealand while astonishingly loosing in a 3-2 defeat against Slovakia.

Hence, Italy exited the 2010 World Cup with two points, securing the bottom of the table spot, earmarking the first time in history Italy had failed to win a game at a World Cup finals.

Four years after, Italy booked another qualification to the World Cup, hosted by Brazil in 2014. Despite a promising start with a 2-1 victory over England, the tournament quickly soured. A shocking 1-0 loss to Costa Rica was followed by a controversial 1-0 defeat to Uruguay.

For the second consecutive time, Italy was exiting the World Cup after three games in the competition, speaking volumes of their inability to keep up with the quality of play on the world stage.

Then came Russia 2018, for the time in 60 years, the World Cup took place without Italy. Under manager Gian Piero Ventura, the team struggled in qualifying and was forced into playoff against Sweden.

In the two legged encounter, a 1-0 loss in Solna followed by a 0-0 draw at the iconic San Siro Stadium was more than enough to hand over the qualification to a Sweden team, captained by legendary Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Another chance for Italy to qualify to the Mundial was made available, this was the Qatar 2022 qualifying series, just months after winning Euro 2020 and appearing to be “back,” Italy suffered perhaps their most embarrassing and humiliating exit.

After failing to top their group, hence, not gaining the automatic qualification, Italy were made to face North Macedonia in a playoff semifinal. In as much as Italy dominated possession which culminated into them snatching the first goal, they conceded a 92nd-miute goal to lose against North Macedonia.

Today, same old Italy, the history of failure has repeated itself in grand style as they have proven to be out out of steam and not ready to amke a return on to the world stage.

In a much expanded new format of the World Cup, the “Azurrri drought” has officially reached a staggering 12 years and will be 16-years by the next World Cup tournament, the nightmare continues.

After navigating the initial qualifiers, Italy faced Bosnia and Herzegovina in a high-stakes playoff final in Zenica. Moise Kean gave Italy an early lead, but a red card for Alessandro Bastoni in the 41st-minute shifted the momentum.

Bosnia equalized in the 79th-minute, forcing the game to penalties-outcome of the penalty indicates that, Italy have been beaten on shootout by 4-1 which further shatters their hopes of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What Now?

The paradox ofItalian football remains its greatest mystery: how can a nation win European Championship in 2021 and produce world-class talents, yet remain incapable of navigating a World Cup qualifying group?

As the world gathers in three nations, United States of America, Canada, and Mexico this summer, the four stars on the Italian crest will serve as a reminder of glorious past that feels increasingly disconnected from a bleak present. The road to 2030 begins today, but for Azzurri, the journey back to relevance has never looked more daunting.
