WC26 countdown Epi2:Africa roared over world champions Argentina in Italy

At the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Africa announced its presence with a groundbreaking performance as the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon silenced reigning champions star studded Argentinian side.

A little over two decades ago, at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, arguably, West Africa’s best footballing nation at the Mundial muzzled Argentina – cementing Africa’s prowess as a continent bless with footballing greats as they completely edged past one of South America’s best.

Starting Eleven Of Both Teams

Carlos Bilardo as the coach of Argentina paraded a glitzy side, involving: Nery Pumpido, Nestor Fabbri, Nestor Lorenzo, Roberto Sensini, Oscar Ruggeri, Juan Simon, Sergio Batista, Jose Basualdo, Jorge Burruchaga, Abel Baldo, and Diego Maradona leading the side as the captain.

Meanwhile, Cameroon featured Thomas N’kono, Benjamin Massing, Bertin Ebwelle, Emmanuel Kunde, Stephen Tataw, Victor Ndip; Andre Kana-Biyik, Emile Mbouh, Louis Mfede, Francois Omam-Biyik, and Cyrille Makanaky.

Pre-match analysis from pundits:

Renowned sports pundits prior to this freaky encounter had their analysis geared towards a tangent which only suggested nothing but another ninety-minutes of thrilling action of football, which will end in an African side being thumped by an unforgiving attack made up of Maradona, Burruchaga, and Udinese’s Abel Baldo – this arguments weren’t far-fetched before the games.

Plus, the reigning champions were presenting seven of their integral squad members who had played vital roles in their previous world campaign in which they triumph. This automatically had called for a panic from the African spectacle. However, the Lions had in their ranks, ageless Roger Milla in their ranks blended with experienced N’kono and Joseph-Antoine Bell, who tasted the world staged in Cameroon’s last appearance at the World Cup, eight years prior.

This being said, both sides had not encountered each other in either a friendly or competitive game hence, a clean slate of statistical head-to-head, head of technical teams for each side only had to develop game strategies by making use of previous games of opponents which had the tendencies of playing in anyone’s favour.

Now, to the game:

Africa’s representatives, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon approached the game with tactical defensive formation, setting up with glaring indications of remaining discipline and compact with a low block, averting any potential goal scoring attack from Argentina.

On the flip side, Carlos Bilardo had set up his team to be fluid in attack, whiles demanding more from the midfield in order to undo any defensive plans of the opposition. Certainly, in the opening minutes of action, Argentina failed to take their chances as the Cameroonian defensive were displaying signs of being nervousness.

With early eagerness and pressure in clearing their lines, needless defensive works from the defense of Cameroon in the early stages attracted a infringements which further led to the officiating center referee brandishing a cautioning card to the likes of Benjamin Massing.

Catapulted by enthused of over 79,000 fans in the iconic San Siro Stadium, the Lions were cheered on with every attacking chance they had against the World Champions. After a goalless first-half, the Cameroonians returned into the second-half of actions with an unfazed posture and a poised set of renewed energy as they exhibited signs of readiness to crackdown Argentina.

Meanwhile, Argentina walked out of the tunnel with a killer-instinct demeanor as they were in a haste to brush off the ‘underdogs’ with ease to secure the much needed maximum points.

In that spirit, the Indomitable Lions began to roar in the second-half however, a trip on Argentina’s Claudio Caniggia from a harsh tackle by Andre Kana-Biyik saw him walking off the pitch right on top of the hour depriving his side the opportunity to play according to their tactical system. This set-back did not hinder the Lions’ quest to make history as they kept on possessing threats.

Valery Nepomnyashchy’s team ten men defied all odds – kept their heads up which won them a freekick, a sublime cross from Emmanuel Kunde was flick on nicely by Manayanky which astonishingly found Omam Biyik who brush aside his marker, Roberto Sensini to pull off a powerful header – goalkeeper deceived an awkward bounce, Pumpido allowed the ball to slip through his fingers.

San Siro erupted, the world was marveled, Africa stood tall and a goal for the Indomitable Lions was registered against Argentina on the 67th minute of time played. Massing could not keep his calm as he was also sent off to further increase Argentina’s chances of securing an equalizer or comeback from a goal down.

Few minutes later, Roger Milla launched another blistering counter attack, produced a sweet pass to Emile Mbouh, who in hesitation fired way off target to keep Argentina’s hopes alive. Few attacking threats from Argentina in the dying embers of the game was futile hence, handing over a well deserving win to the underdogs, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

In a post-match interview, goal scorer Francois Omam-Biyik said, “at the time, I couldn’t really believe it. I’d scored plenty of other goals in my career but that one at my very first World Cup against none than Maradona’s Argentina. It took on an entirely different dimension because nobody had given us a hope of winning. That goal was when I truly announced myself on the global stage.”
