GPL 24/25: Compendium and review of match-week 14

The resumption of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) over the weekend was characterized with much anxious outcomes and delightful situations on the side of the footballing fans who patronized the game in the various league game centers or in their homes as they watched on the television or listened to commentary on the various radio stations that covered the game.

Delving into the fixtures and the results that transpired in match-week 14, on Friday, December 20th, 2024, Accra Hearts of Oak humbled Berekum Chelsea as they beat them by 3-1 which was the only game which took place on the day.

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, Bechem United hosted reigning league champions, FC Samartex which ended in a one goal victory for the home side plus, Bibiani Gold Stars kept their heads-up as the won by 2-1 against Nsoatreman FC.

Dreams FC once again failed to snatch any points as they lost by 1-2 against Asante Kotoko meanwhile, the Volta boys, Kpando Hearts of Lions smashed newly promoted side Basake Holy Stars by 3-1, Nations FC also thrashed Legon Cities by three goals without conceding and Young Apostles also managed to secure a point against Vision FC as the game ended in a one all game.

Aduana Stars were scheduled to face Accra Lions on Monday, 23rd December, 2024 which both sides after ninety-minutes failed to record any goals hence, sharing a point each.

Review of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) after match-week 14:

The league’s match-week fourteen was one which was entangled with a lot of competitiveness since the teams in the Ghana top-flight league had it at the back of their minds that, any outcome of the game would have a great say with regards to the league standings of the teams.

Now, Hearts of Lions have seven wins, six draws and have lost just one with an aggregated points of twenty-seven same as Bibiani Gold Stars who are on the second position by virtue of the fact that, the league leaders have a higher goal difference.

More so, Bechem United have also recorded seven wins, five draws and lost two with a total points of twenty-six which is enough to make them the third best placed team while the forth team, Nations FC have seven wins, four draws and lost three boasting of twenty-five points as the fourth placed team in the league.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak, Medeama SC, Berekum Chelsea, Basake Holy Stars, and FC Samartex sums up the top-ten team after match-week fourteen.

Meanwhile, the fifth placed team, Asante Kotoko are in a three points deficit to the league leaders as compared to Hearts of Oak, who have twenty-two points as the sixth team on the league and five points behind the league leaders, Hearts of Lion.

However, it’s still early days yet for the next champions of the Ghana premier league to be determined. Clubs like Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, and Medeama SC can be in the title contending race should they adopt a little bit of winning consistency and would not afford to drop points against clubs especially in the top-four while they managed to grind favorable points in the rest of the games.

It is also interesting to note that, the current league leaders, Hearts of Lions are on top of the league with their goals scoring opportunities hovering around the entire team, the likes of Sarpong, Sakyi, Obeng Junior, Boateng, and Oppong, who is the team’s leading goal scorer.

Top five goal scorers after match-week

The Ghana premier league after match-week fourteen has seen Nations FC’s center-foward, Francis Charwetey who has been in and out of the team due to nation team duties leading the top goal scorers chart with eight goals, right behind him is Asnate Kotoko’s Amoah, who has recorded seven goals, Heart of Lions leading goal scorer, Oppong falls on third with six goals same as Basake Holy Stars striker, Tweneboah whiles Stephen Amankonah of Berekum Chelsea, Bibiani Gold Star’s Attah Kumi and Nations FC’s Sulemana firing five goals each.

As the match-week ascends, the crunchy moments is gradually stirring up the interest with respect to which teams find themselves in the relegation zone which is of course, no team in the top-flight’s wish.

That not withstanding, from the eighteenth position, which is the bottom of the table, Legon Cities occupy’s that position, above them with twelve points is Dreams FC whiles Accra Lions is also with just one point higher than Dreams FC sums up the relegation docket.
