In a bid to formally reinforce the spirit of transparency back into the governing structure and policies of African football, Confederation of Football AFrican Football (CAF) President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe has officially addressed the AFCON 2025 finale bruhaha.
The backdrop of Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s determination to reinstall African football into a reputable limelight stems from the just ended African Cup of Nations 2025 tournament, hosted by Morocco in grand style.
However, the unprecedented scenarios in football history prevailed as series of rulings churned out by the center referee had stirred up “irresponsible” act by the two nations who had participated in the finals.
Eventually, Morocco as the host nation could not make history by securing the ultimate as the Senegalese team had a slight edge over the star studded Moroccan national team.
A little over two months after the AFCON final, the Moroccan football federation had not relent and conceded defeat to Senegal hence, proceeded to CAF Appeal’s committee after an initial ruling from CAF’s disciplinary committee on regarding the indiscipline acts exhibited by the players of both teams on the night.
After Morocco had petitioned CAF Appeal’s committee, the new and revised evidences presented by the Moroccan football federation by their lawyers further prompted new rulings which indicated that, Senegal have been stripped off their AFCON trophy plus new sanctions have been slapped on some other individual players who are regarded to have brought the name of the game into disrepute.
CAF President’s Trip To Senegal
On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, report from sources revealed that, Dr. Patrice Motsepe had embarked on an official visit to Senegal, as he seeks to realign the lost hope in African football into the best possible position.
Dr. Patrice Motsepe began his address by clarifying the facts regarding the AFCON 2025 competition’s champion. He confirmed that Senegal rightfully received their $10 million as prize money – a record breaking sum intended to boost the development of football within the winning nation.
Along with the financial reward, the President noted that, each player was officially awarded their gold medals, an AFCON trophy and the bragging rights which stems from the prestige of the title.
The Rule of Law: Statutes and the Appeal
Despite the clear-cut nature of the victory, Dr Motsepe emphasized that CAF is not a “one-man-show.” He highlighted that the organization must strictly adhere to its statutes , particularly respecting the independence of the Appeal Committee, “Governance and fairness are the bedrocks of new CAF. We must respect the rules and the decisions made by our judicial bodies, regardless of the teams involved.”
What next?
This saga is more than a simple clarification of prize money; it is a testament to the evolving professional landscape of African football. By addressing the elephant in the room – the delicate balance between pitch results and statutory law -Patrice Motsepe has signaled that the era of arbitrary decision-making is coming to an end.
As the case moves toward its final resolution at the Court of Arbitration for ports (CAS), the footballing world is left with a powerful message. While the $10 million serves a reward for athletic excellence, the adherence to due process serves as the foundation for the sport’s future.
