CAF’s Verdict On Libya vs Nigeria Match: “Is Declared Lost By Forfeit By Libya (by a score of 3-0)”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary board have declared their judgement regarding an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match involving Libya and Nigeria in an official press statement.

Following the statement released by CAF on October 26, 2024, which clearly detailed the merits on which Nigeria has won the case presented to the disciplinary board after thorough investigation had been conducted.

“Libya Football Federation was found to have breached Article 31 of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code,” CAF stated.

Further, the disciplinary board of CAF indicated that, Nigeria would be awarded all the three maximum points plus three goals as against, Libya, who would be punished for breaching the regulations with a fine worth USD$ 50,000.

“The match No.87 Libya v Nigeria of the TotalEnergies CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi) is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score 3-0).

“The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision,” CAF stipulated in their judgement letter.

This judgement from the disciplinary board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stems from the back of a 2025 African Cup of Nations Qualifying group stage game which was scheduled to take place in Benghazi, a suburb in Libya on October 15, 2024.

However, Libya as the home team had their football federation failing to host the travelling national team, Nigeria. Per series of reports from the camp of Nigeria upon their arrival into Libya’s airport indicated that, the playing body including the authorities leading the team were stranded in excess of about thirteen hours at the air port hence, deciding to head back to their destination and ignoring the game.

Renowned Ghanaian sports journalist, Gary Al-Smith fumed his thought on the verdict CAF have put out regarding the game between Libya v Nigeria on his social media platform, “now that CAF has ruled in Nigeria’s favour, as I was confident they would. It must be said that Libya underestimated how loudly Nigeria will respond to being treated poorly. The world has changed. If you want to play at Dark Arts FC, better play by its rules.”
