Expelled, Rebranded, Promoted: The Surreal Return of Ashantigold 04

The return of Ashantigold to the Ghana Premier League is not a standard story of sporting redemption; it is a masterclass in administrative survival. But as the dust settles on their promotion charge, a lingering question remains: is this a genuine rebirth, or just the same old entity wearing fresh disguise?

To understand the current landscape of Ghana football, one must look past the yellow-and-black jerseys and examine the fine print of a legal maneuver that has left the footballing community partitioned.

Brief recap on why Ashantigold SC was expelled from the Premiership

The four-time Ghana Premier league (GPL) champion effectively ceased to exist in July 2023. Following a high-profile match-fixing scandal and a defiant refusal to distance itself from banned leadership, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) took the ultimate step: permanent expulsion.

Through the spectacles of the law, Ashantigold SC has been killed-stripped of its membership, its history, and its right to compete. This ruling was officially rolled out during the GFA’s 29th Congress meeting.

Bekwai Breathe life into Ashantigold SC

In June 2025, the narrative shifted from a dead club to a rebirthed club. Through the acquisition of Bekwai Heroes FC and subsequent renaming of the club to Ashanti gold 04 FC, the “Miners” found an alternate en route into Ghana’s football.

While the GFA maintains that this is a legally distinct entity with no ties to the previous administrators, the sights and sounds at the Len Clay Stadium tell a different story.

Now, the “new” entity without any hesitation, motioned into rebranding the club. In February 2026, sitting atop Zone Two of the Division One League, they made a statement of intent by hiring veteran coach Karim Zito.

The tactical mastermind worked; two months later, the target for Ashantigold 04 FC to gain the Ghana Premier League status has been achieved as the club would be amongst one of the three newly promoted sides, set to participate in the 2026/27 Premiership.
