Govt can ‘leverage’ on other options to fight the illegal mining menace – Pres John Mahama

Government is set to adopt other options in its quest to fight against the illegal mining fight – President John Mahama believes.

Ghana’s forest and surrounding water bodies in the last decade has been under immense attacks by environmental criminals as they hunt down minerals in order to quench their poor financial status.

However, these actions by the perpetrators who double up as victims of unemployment and bad governance are today exposing the innocent citizenry to chronic diseases plus several other economic debt to the government.

In that vein, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama‘s first press meeting at the Jubilee House, today, Wednesday, 10th September 2025, he reacted to questions regarding to one of the major existential problems which is serving as a threat to the environment and its habitat.

The President of Ghana stated that, he is not in sink with the other citizens who believe that the only option to curb this national menace is to call for a national emergency in those areas where the crime is taking place.

“We still have leverage to continue to fight galamsey [illegal mining] without necessarily implementing a state of emergency,” President John Mahama indicated.
